Italian Sausage & Peppers

In the northeast part of the country, this Italian sausage and peppers recipe will be found at virtually every block party, county fair, family reunion, or any other gathering where people are grilling sausage. Italian sausage topped with sweet and tangy peppers is such a classic combination; it's hard to imagine one without the other.

Slow Cooker Thanksgiving Stuffing

Thanksgiving is a big deal at the Cabrera residence.  The menu is planned weeks in advance to make sure everyone is satisfied with the side dishes and desserts.  My mom takes out her good silverware to be polished.  My dad spends the days prior to the dinner cleaning the house and making the backyard look... Cheese Straws

Justin Devillier upgrades classic Southern cheese straws with Sharifi's Iranian spices at his New Orleans restaurant La Petite Grocery . He sometimes swaps out the cardamom for equal amounts of ground coriander or fennel seed. "I've always assumed cheese straws originated in the Carolinas," says Devillier, "but that may be because my mother-in-law always brings them when she visits from South Carolina."

Simplest Cinnamon Lamb Stew

It's Passover and Easter this week, so I can't not give you a lamb recipe. Here's a really easy one. I took the concept of Marge Piercy's Cinnamon Lamb in her book, Pesach for the Rest of Us, and applied it to a stew since lamb stew meat is what I had on hand last night, along with two hungry men and a culinarily curious toddler for dinner.

Pumpkin Cake with Cream Cheese Icing and Caramelized Pumpkin Seeds

The inspiration from this cake came from Tartine's pumpkin tea cake. I wanted to make a lighter, cake-ier cake, closer to a dessert you'd eat at a dinner party than to a quickbread you'd eat for breakfast. The frosting recipe is based on my idol Dorie Greenspan's Tangy Cream Cheese Frosting.

Singapore Noodles

It's not entirely clear where Singapore noodles—the stir-fried curried rice noodles with shrimp, pork, and vegetables—come from, though it's unlikely Singapore is the source. Regardless, they're a stir-fry classic, and are easy to make at home. Here's what you need to know, from how to choose the right rice noodles to how to make the stir-fry work on a home burner.

Chicken Cordon Bleu-Croque Monsieur

Sometimes I ask my fiancé what he wants for dinner, sometimes I don't. Typically I don't, because his answer is always the same—Dragon Express. (Seriously, he would eat Chinese takeout over homemade cooking any day. I really wonder about him sometimes.) I made an exception last week by asking his culinary opinion, and he threw me a serious curveball. "Chicken Cordon Bleu!" he exclaimed. This was odd, mainly because in our four plus years together I'd never heard him mention nor seen him eat chicken cordon bleu.

Tortilla Espanola with Rainbow Chard

This week at The Forest Feast, I needed to use up some chard from the nearby farmer's market, so I cooked up a big skillet Tortilla Espanola. This dish is usually made with just potatoes and onions, but I like to add some greens — it becomes almost like a crustless quiche. The addition of the colorful chard lightens the dish a bit, but is still quite filling. I like that this meal is made in a single pan and works well for breakfast, lunch or dinner!

Brown Butter Peaches & Chantilly Cream

There are plenty of outstanding dessert recipes that make good use of bountiful summer peaches. Some are as simple as drizzling a few halves with olive oil and throwing them on the grill, while others, like a cobbler or freshly-churned ice cream, require just a smidge more effort. This easy recipe — a grownup take on a childhood classic — falls on the delightfully relaxed end of things. Sliced peaches are tossed in a toasted brown butter sauce and finished off with a crown of barely whipped cream. To me it feels like summer in a bowl.

Green Bean Casserole

When I think about traditional holiday side dishes, Green Bean Casserole always comes to mind. The problem for me is that two of the main ingredients come from a can. Although your mom's green bean casserole may have been delicious, most likely it was made with a can of Cream of Mushroom soup and topped with a tin of fried onions. But don't despair, there are ways to recreate this classic the way you remember, only healthier and a lot more fresh tasting. With just a bit of freshly grated parmesan, some sauteed onions and a homemade, flavorful sauce, the green bean casserole of your youth is taken to a new level and becomes something even more special that your kids will...

Fresh tomatoes and spinach pair well with nutty Asiago and tangy feta cheese in this make-ahead dish that's great for lunch, brunch or dinner. Substitute Parmesan, Romano, or sharp provolone cheese for the Asiago, if you prefer. Presliced mushrooms and packaged spinach provide a head start. Chicken and Wild Rice Soup

This soup is warm and cozy, and completely essential for the blustery, wet weather of late. It's also a family favourite, and can be found on our dinner table many times between now and next March. Making ample portions, this soup provides plenty of leftovers, which often find their way into a thermos tucked with the boy's lunch boxes. This, in turn, makes life easy for me and ultra tasty for the kids. And if you're celebrating Thanksgiving this week, your leftover turkey will make a nice substitute for the chicken in the recipe. We're eating soup two or three...

Pistachio Meringue Stack with Rose Cream and Strawberries

The classic combination of meringue and strawberries gets a new twist in this recipe. Pistachios and brown sugar add a depth of flavor to the meringue, rose water perfumes the whipped cream and mascarpone filling, and everything comes together to highlight the luscious taste of ripe strawberries. This recipe was originally inspired by Nigella Lawson's Gooey Chocolate Stack. Summer, and leftover ingredients from a recent tryst with kheer (Indian rice pudding) inspired this version. You can locate pistachios and rose water at any Indian or Middle-Eastern store; if not, I'm sure the combination of almonds and pure vanilla would be equally delightful. This delicious dessert also happens to be gluten-free. - Heena

Konigsberger Klopse (German Meatballs in Creamy Caper Sauce)

A classic! Authentic Knigsberger Klopse are made from ground veal, beef, and pork, along with a small amount of anchovies (or sardines or herring), chopped onions, bread crumbs, eggs, and spices. The traditional creamy sauce that accompanies the dumplings are made from the broth in which the dumplings were cooked, flour, cream, white wine, lemon juice, and capers. Delicious! Serve with boiled new potatoes and my Rotkohl recipe #108449 #108449. Also makes a great appetizer! A little history: Predecessors of the Knigsberger Klopse date back to the Middle Ages. However, the East Prussian name Klops (Klops = meat dumpling) didn't originate until the 18th century. Knigsberger Klopse was invented in the city of Knigsberg (then the capital of East Prussia; today known as Kaliningrad, Russia) around 200 years ago. My German/Polish/French grandmother was born and raised in East Prussia, about 30 kilometers from Knigsberg. This recipe is my version of her delicious Knigsberger Klop

Almond Crusted Chicken

Hey Everyone! How are you liking my Healthy Habits blogs so far? Did anyone try out the GNC protein shake I recommended? As promised in my Healthy Habits: My Typical Meal Plan post, here is the recipe for my all-time favorite meal for dinner: almond chicken. It's super healthy and it's really easy to make (remember, if I can make it anyone can). I found this recipe online over a year ago and have been loving it ever since! It makes me think I'm eating fried chicken fingers, but it's actually just healthy chicken breast breaded in wheat flour and almonds. Put it this way-my 8 year old sister devours these like she would a McDonalds Happy Meal, but they're healthy! I make this recipe at least once a week. It keeps well for a few days in the fridge so I usually just heat them up on a cookie sheet in the oven when I want the leftovers. I cannot explain how yummy it is to eat yet easy it is to make. Like I said, I've made it at least once a week for over a year now (OK, I'll admit it, it's one of the only things I actually can cook) so it's like second nature for me to whip these up. Here's the whole recipe (serves 4) courtesy of EatingWell.com:Ingredients Canola oil cooking spray 1/2 cup sliced almonds 1/4 cup whole-wheat flour 1 1/2 teaspoons paprika 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder 1/2 teaspoon dry mustard 1/4 teaspoon salt 1/8 teaspoon freshly ground pepper 1 1/2 teaspoons extra-virgin olive oil 4 large egg whites 1 pound chicken tenders Instructions Preheat oven to 475
