A basic French toast recipe that works with many types of bread - white, whole wheat, cinnamon-raisin, Italian or French. Serve hot with butter or margarine and maple syrup.
Because it's so thick, this French toast is made in two steps: first we brown it on the griddle, and then finish the cooking in the oven to ensure that the custard is fully cooked.
My family loves it when I make this variation of French toast that my grandma once made for me. It's a GREAT substitute for sticky cinnamon rolls and a lot less hassle ... ENJOY!
This French toast recipe is different because it uses flour. I have given it to some friends and they've all liked it better than the French toast they usually make!

Grapefruit or mixed fruit marmalade will work just as well as the orange marmalade called for in the recipe. Serve the casserole with honey or pancake syrup warmed with orange rind and a splash of orange juice (add one teaspoon rind and two tablespoons juice per 1/2 cup syrup). This easy casserole can be assembled in less than 15 minutes and stored in the refrigerator overnight.
This overnight French toast casserole saves you the trouble of standing over a griddle flipping individual slices of French toast. For more great breakfast casseroles, see our complete collection of breakfast and brunch recipes.
